Rahul Dev Burman hindi Biography

Overview

Rahul Dev Burman is considered today’s icon in Hindi film music and cinema. The son of legendary music director S. D. Burman, he is attributed with introducing the style of electronic rock and creating a brand new sound in Hindi film music. His compositions were peppy, modern and full of life and gained great popularity from the late 1960s till the early to mid-1980s. Most of the career-defining songs sung by great artists like Asha Bhosle (spouse) and Kishore Kumar were composed by him. Under the training of Ali Akbar Khan, R. D. Burman forayed into films by assisting his father S. D. Burman. He often played the mouth organ in his father's orchestras and sometimes also composed a tune or two (‘Ae Meri Topi Palat ke Aa’ from Funtoosh (1956) and the popular ‘Sar Jo tera Chakraiye’ from Pyaasa (1957)). His first debut as an independent music director was with Guru Dutt's film Raaz (1959) which unfortunately was shelved. Finally,he got his much deserved break from comedian Mehmood with Chote Nawab (1961). The ingenious talent of R.D. came to light with ‘Ghar Aajaa Ghir Aaye’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Five years late in 1965r, Mehmood again offered him another film, Bhoot Bangla. His song ‘Aao Twist Karein’ became very popular and R. D. also made his debut in acting alongside Mehmood in the film displaying fine comic timing. He also helped in ending the rift between Lata Mangeshkar and his father. He got his big break with Nasir Hussain's Shammi Kapoor starrer Teesri Manzil (1966). Initially Shammi was not happy since he preferred the seasoned musical duo of Shankar-Jaikishen who had composed music for most of his films. However, after listening to the fresh and youthful compositions of R.D., Shammi relented. Songs like ‘O Haseena Zulfon Waali’, ‘Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyaar Tera’, ‘O Mere Sona Re Sona Re’, ‘Deewaana Mujhsa Nahin’ became extremely popular with the audience and became chart- busters. After a string of hits like Padosan (1968) and Hussain's Pyar Ka Mausam (1969), R. D. got his biggest success in the early 1970s with the Rajesh Khanna starrers Kati Patang (1970), and Amar Prem (1971). He continued to wow audiences with his versatile compositions like the classical song ‘Raina Beeti , the extremely popular numbers in Hare Rama Kare Krishna (1971) and the sexy ‘Piya Tu Ab to Aajaa’ from Caravan (1971). After his phenomenal success as a pop icon with films like Apna Desh (1972), Jawaani Deewaani (1972), Yaadon ki Baraat (1973), Khel Khel Mein (1975) and Hum Kissi se Kum Nahin (1977), he paired up with writer - director Gulzar to create gems like ‘Beeti Na Beetayi Raina’ (Parichay ,1972), ‘Is Mod se Jaate Hain’ (Aandhi, 1975), ‘O Manjhi Re’ (Khusboo, 1975) and ‘Naam Gum Jayega’ (Kinara, 1977). However, towards the mid-1980s, R. D.’s successful career took a turn with his films not doing well at the box-office. New artists like Bappi Lahiri and the Disco fever had taken over. Still he managed to give superb scores like Sagar (1985) and Ijaazat (1987) but that could not sustain his position as an ace music director. He continued to give few hits with songs like Tumse Milke in Parinda (1989) but his last noted score was perhaps 1942 - A Love Story (1993). Compositions like ‘Ek Ladki ko Dekha’, ‘Kuch na Kaho’, ‘Pyaar Hua Chupke Se’, ‘Rhimjhim Rhimjhim’ reflect the ingenuity of the great music composer.
