Naushad hindi Biography

Overview

Naushad Ali is a legendary film music director. He is accredited with giving the industry singing gems like Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi and making them extremely popular. During his illustrious career he did less than a hundred films but 26 of his films went on to celebrate jubilees. Naushad's style was distinctive and innovative. His symphonies encompassed classical rhythms. His music was based on the Indian ragas and thus managed to create distinctive music. His love for classical music was legendary - in the 1952 movie Baiju Bawra, he employed classical singers to sing his ghazals. Naushad was a movie enthusiast and he would spend his time listening to the live orchestras that accompanied silent films. The celebrated musicians Ustad Ghurbat Ali, Ustad Yusuf Ali, and Ustad Babban Saheb; were his teachers of classical Indian music. He initiated his career by composing music for theatrical groups like the Windsor Music Entertainers. Naushad moved to Bombay in the late 1930s to pursue his dream to be a musician, and he had to struggle a lot. He had several rejections and he had to strive hard to reach to the top. Composer Khemchand Prakash retained him as his assistant and taught him. Naushad remained forever indebted to Prakash for his generosity. Although he got his break in 1940 with the film Prem Nagar, he received recognition only in 1942 with the film Sharda. He attained high acclaim with his film Ratan in 1944, and then there was no turning back for him. All his songs turned out to be blockbusters for hit films, particularly films made by either Abdul Rashid Kardar or Mehboob Khan. Naushad was a pioneer in the field of sound mixing, of separate recording of vocal and music tracks in playback singing, and using background music to enhance characters' moods and dialogues through music. His music was contemporary and he adapted Western techniques and instruments into his music, as evident in the films Jadoo (1951) and Mere Mehboob (1963). In the 1950s and 1960s, Naushad's career was a rising graph. Some of his tunes were featured in timeless classics like the Mughal period films Baiju Bawra (1952) and Mughal-E-Azam (1960) and the epic Mother India (1957). Naushad had to struggle to keep his music pure and classical, as there was an increasing demand for faster, foot tapping numbers. In the 1968 film Saathi, he was obliged to re-record two of his songs to increase their pace and their allure; to his utter dislike. In 1961, he composed for Dilip Kumar's Gunga Jumna which was a smashing hit. Unfortunately, the demand for his music decreased due to the commercial failure of some of his movies. Naushad gave the music for the courtesan romance movie, Pakeezah (1972) which became a huge success.
