Story
Arjun plays modern-day Robin Hood when he steals black money from two corrupt government officials and uses it to develop the remote village he hails from.
A revenge story or the rise of an underdog is what one often expects
from a Vishal-starrer, and Kaththi Sandai, is no different. But, with a
director like Suraj at the helm, the plot takes its own time to
establish the purpose of the protagonist, thanks to the parallel comedy
and romantic tracks.
Tamizh Selvan (Jagapati Babu), Deputy Commissioner of Police, nabs a
criminal (Tarun Arora) while the latter was carrying a huge sum of black
money in a vehicle. While Selvan has been winning appreciation for his
brave act, enter Arjun (Vishal) who falls for Selvan’s sister
(Tamannaah), a psychology student. Arjun tries to win her heart with the
help of a self-proclaimed goon (Soori). He succeeds in wooing her
without much effort, and her brother, Selvan, too, becomes in awe of
him, after Arjun saves his life.
The brother and sister then get the shock of their life when Arjun
reveals his real identity. As a man on a mission, with lot of scores to
be settled with a politician (Jayaprakash) and other people who made his
life miserable in the past, he goes on a revenge mode to avenge them.
In between, he gets to tackle people like psychiatrist Boothri
(Vadivelu) and his team, who has been roped in by Tamizh Selvan to crack
the details surrounding Arjun's mysterious identity.
Vishal, in a role which is tailor-made for him, shines in action
sequences, something which has always been a cakewalk for him.
Tamannaah, however, doesn't have much to do except for appearing in
songs in glamorous costumes, with her role sadly falling under the
series of 'too naive and non-brainy' heroines which Kollywood have been
witnessing of late. Unfortunately, the film which was relying big time
on Vadivelu's comeback, couldn't do proper justice to the veteran
comedian, as many of his antics felt flat. Soori, on the other hand, was
lucky that a few of his 'numbers', comparatively, hit the target.
Jagapati Babu delivered what was expected of him, though his character
had a lot more scope. Tarun Arora was just okay.
Barring a back-to-back twist before the interval, the movie was almost
predictable and was a mishmash of several old films. With a
not-so-proper characterisations for the ones who played prominent roles
and a done-to-death plot, the film, overall doesn't engage.
