Overview

Chitragupt was a celebrated music director of the 1960s in Bollywood. He was a lecturer in Patna but then moved to Bombay to take up a career as a composer in movies. He was an assistant to music director, S. N. Tripathi for a while. In 1946, he got a break with Ramnik Vaidya. After a lot of hard work, Chitragupt made his mark in 1952 with the movie Sindbad the Sailor, featuring the hit duet, Adaa Se Jhoomte Hue’. Chitragupt’s had deep classical roots which were manifested in songs like Kishore Kumar's "Paayal Waali Dekhna" from Ek Raaz. His music was contemporary and light-hearted, as well as foot-tapping, as can be seen in songs like 'Dekho Mausam Kya Bahaar Hai' from Opera House. Chitragupt was also a talented singer and lyricist and had worked with all the great lyricists of that period like Majrooh Sultanpuri, Anand Bakshi, Prem Dhawan, Rajinder Krishan and Sahir Ludhianvi. Chitragupt was one of the renowned composers of Bhojpuri films. He had some superb Bhojpuri films under his belt like, 'Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhaube', 'Laagi Naahi Chhute Rama' and 'Gangaa'. Along with Bhojpuri films, he also composed for Punjabi & Gujarati films, including the music for an MGR film, which was dubbed from Tamil.
